The Labyrinth as a Meditative and Healing Tool
How can a pillow be a meditative or healing tool? If the pillow has a labyrinth on it, wonderful things can happen to those who use it prayerfully and meditatively. Although labyrinths have been in existence for at least 4,000 years, there is a recent resurgence of their popularity in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, parks, homes and cathedrals. Following is a very brief explanation of the labyrinth’s origin and its uses.
Labyrinth Notes
The labyrinth is an ancient meditative art form whose design can serve as a metaphor for one’s life journey. It is believed to have evolved out of the spiral figure found in all of nature. Its path helps users circle inward to the centre of their soul. The labyrinth’s centre represents moving toward a goal and allowing one to release emotions that they have carried inside – in order to create or envision a solution as one turns around in order to work one’s way back to the beginning. This can be a liberating exercise which lifts us out of our linear, left-brain thought processes by invoking our intuitive, creative right brain.
Whether one walks a labyrinth or traces the path with a finger, the labyrinth pattern is a powerful tool for reflection, meditation, realignment, and a deeper knowledge of the Self. Although walking labyrinths are starting to appear locally, they are not always accessible when the need arises. For that reason, Pillow Talk Creations began to create a handy, portable device in the form of a decorative pillow which can be accessed with ease.
Labyrinths are not mazes. Mazes may have more than one entrance and exit and are designed to make us lose our way; they are games. Labyrinths serve the opposite purpose; they are designed to help us find our way. They have only one path – from the outer edge into the centre and back out again.
